“MACAM-macam Berapit” is making a joyful return on July 19 (Saturday) from 5pm to 11pm at the Berapit Public Market, in conjunction with the 2025 George Town Festival.
Jointly organised by Berapit assemblywoman Heng Lee Lee’s Service Centre, the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) of Kampung Baru, and the Women and Family Development Committee (JPWK) of Berapit, the event promises a lively blend of traditional heritage and creative expression.
The event will bring together traditional performances, interactive art, creative workshops, and a variety of food experiences to offer residents and visitors a night filled with imagination and vibrancy.

At a recent press conference, Heng said Macam-macam Berapit has become an important cultural platform for the local community.
“It not only provides a fun and family-friendly experience but also invites the public to discover both traditional and contemporary local arts. The event aims to encourage people to appreciate our cultural heritage while inspiring youths to engage with the community, support sustainability, and explore the arts,” Heng said.
Among those present at the press conference were MBSP councillor Ng Wai Leong; Berapit JPWK chairperson Chew Poh Swee; George Town Festival representative Jack Wong; MPKK Kampung Baru chairperson Lim Kiea Hean; MPKK Kampung Aston chairperson Sim Bing Haa; MPKK Kampung Besar chairperson Chen Kin Ngong; and MPKK Kampung Baru secretary Chern Hee Kheng.
One of the most anticipated highlights this year is the traditional Jikey performance presented by My Penang Creative. Originating from Perlis and Kedah, Jikey weaves together storytelling, dance, improvisation and traditional music. Once popular across northern Malaysia, the art form is now fading. Heng hopes to reintroduce this valuable cultural heritage to younger audiences.
The event also features an exciting drum circle led by The Colour of Sound. Open to people of all ages, no prior experience is needed to join in rhythmic drumming. It’s a joyful, unifying activity that brings people together through rhythm and laughter.

Adding to the excitement is a fire-breathing performance by international artists, sure to entertain both children and adults.
Another standout attraction is the “Future-Blender” interactive art installation created by artists Juliana and Andrey Vrady. Using AI and light projections, the artwork transforms participants’ visions of George Town’s future into live digital art displayed onto a large wall. Visitors can also take home a personalised “future portrait” as a memento.
In line with the festival spirit, the event will feature a “GTF 2025 x Elsie With Love” stamp collection activity. By participating in specific booths and performances, visitors can collect uniquely designed stamps and redeem them for exclusive souvenirs.
Two educational and creative workshops are also lined up for children and families. The first is an Awang Jikey mask-making workshop, where participants will craft masks of traditional Jikey characters while learning about their cultural symbolism.
The second is an eco-percussion DIY workshop, where participants use recycled household materials to make percussion instruments, combining rhythm, fun, and environmental awareness. Due to limited spots, early registration is recommended.
For the first time, a cafe-style food section will be introduced at the event. Visitors can enjoy freshly brewed coffee, Western light meals, desserts, and drinks in a stylish and cosy setting, adding a trendy, youthful touch to the evening.
Heng warmly invites everyone to come experience the community’s spirit and creativity.
“On July 19, bring your children, elders, or friends to Berapit Public Market. Enjoy the performances, workshops, good food, and a glimpse into the future. Let’s come together to support local culture, arts, and sustainability.”
