Marketplace observes crowd control and social distancing

A MAXIMUM of 70 persons are allowed into the Tanjung Bungah Market at any one time and they are encouraged to practise social distancing in the fight against Covid-19 from today.

Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Zairil Khir Johari said these measures were taken from today for the good of the people until the movement control order from Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin ends on March 31.

He visited the marketplace this morning together with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor R. Kaliyappan, MBPP Licensing Department officers and Tanjung Bungah Village Community Development Council (MPKK) members.

Zairil also joined them to check the body temperature of the market-goers, who could only enter the market through only one entrance and leave through only one exit.

“Today is the first day of this exercise. We have some 10 members in the team to monitor the situation,” Zairil told reporters.

“It is important to maintain a social distance of at least a meter apart from each other to minimise the spread of the coronavirus.”

In addition, Zairil said the public is also advised to stay at home unless they have to tend to pressing issues.

“From this morning’s monitoring at the market, we found the crowd is cooperative to have their body temperature checked and to line up for their turn to do their marketing,” he said.

He said similar exercise would be held at the market from 6.30am to 10.30am daily until March 31.
