THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is planning to increase the annual percentage rate for abandoned landed residential and commercial premises.

MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the council has agreed to increase the percentage rate by threefold, but not exceeding 35%, for the said premises which have been abandoned.

“The decision was made following the numerous complaints received by the council. We received many complaints of premises being left to ruin with growing scrubs.

“These abandoned properties are causing nuisance to the community living in the area,” he told a press conference after the normal council meeting at City Hall at the Esplanade today.

Yew addressing the media during the press conference.

Yew said that the existing annual percentage rate for landed residential premises is 9.3%.

“The percentage will be increased to 28% for abandoned landed residential premises.

“The percentage for abandoned commercial premises will be increased from 11.55% to 35%,” Yew said.

Yew added that the proposal would have to be presented to the state authority for consideration and approval.
