THE 15th General Election is set to be a challenging one for any political party, says Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow.

“The voters are tired and disappointed with the current political scenario.

“We have witnessed a huge political shift in the last General Election in 2018, followed by the betrayal of the people’s mandate.

“We have party hopping politicians in Malaysia who chose to be part of a backdoor Government.

“These politicians ‘rewarded’ their voters with betrayals, instead of service and honesty.

“The political instability still remains until today,” he said.

Chow, who is also the national DAP vice-chairman, said that DAP must first acknowledge this issue.

“We are working hard to regain the voters’ confidence towards our party and our coalition at the Federal level.

“While in Penang, we must not take the people for granted.

“We cannot take them for granted that they will give us the mandate in the coming General Election,” he said.

Chow urged the members not to lose hope.

“Whatever it is, we must not lose hope. The party’s 55-year journey is not an easy one.

“We have grown from an Opposition party in the past, to a party with the most number of seats (42 seats) in the Dewan Rakyat now.

“We have survived in the political arena back in those days and we have earned the support of the people who understand our struggle.

“We represent the voice of the people in difficulty.

“And the elected representatives from DAP comprised almost every race in this country.

“These are the beauty of our party,” Chow added.

He said that the party members should uphold the party’s struggle.

“The Supremacy of the Constitution and the democratic system must be upheld.

“We want a clean Government that can protect the people’s rights.

“We have managed to develop the country and care for the people when we were part of the Federal Government.

“That was what we did and we need to continue our struggle for the betterment of our people, state and country,” Chow said.

He said the component parties in Pakatan Harapan should assess their strengths and weaknesses.

“We should take appropriate steps to rectify the weaknesses. Set aside incompatibilities and build a strong coalition to regain the people’s confidence,” he added.
