MERS 2019 to stir up the entrepreneurial spirit

IF you are a start-up looking for business validation or funding or interested in setting up a business, the ‘Malaysia Entrepreneur Rising Star 2019’ (MERS 2019) is for you.

Jointly organised by House of Trainings, Green Hero and Redo with the support from the Penang Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage (PETACH) office, the MERS 2019 will see eight speakers from different backgrounds sharing their expertise.

It will be held on Nov 6 at Level 5 auditorium in Komtar from 10am to 7pm.

PETACH chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the event would help start-ups pitch for investment and in the process compete for three awards at stake that can boost their companies’ credibility. The awards are MERS, Best Innovation and Judges’ Choice.

“If you are planning to start a business or are facing some business struggles, learn from the speakers and ask them how they overcame their struggles when they first started their business,” Yeoh told a press conference at Komtar today.

“I believe we need to foster more entrepreneurship in Malaysia to help drive the country’s economy to greater strength. For Malaysia to hit a 4.8% GDP next year that has been forecast, entrepreneurship must be the main key factor to make it happen.”

Chan says digital marketing is very important in this era.

Yeoh said life has become easier in this digital age, citing for example the e-hailing service or a public transport app that did not exist a decade ago.

Also present were Green Hero director and chief executive officer Calvin Chan, House of Trainings consultant Ricky Tan and some of the speakers.

Chan said currently eight start-ups have signed up for the event and they are targeting a total of 10 start-ups. Tickets are limited to 150 attendees for only RM30 each. The closing date is Oct 30.

“Right now, digital marketing is very important as we are living in a digital era. We must also know how to take care of our branding and corporate governance,” said Chan.

“We believe that we will definitely add value to the attendees. Who knows one of them may awaken a giant in them to start a business or even expand their business to create a greater impact on the society.

“At the end of the day, entrepreneurship is all about solving a problem that the society face. So, let’s have more entrepreneurs in Malaysia.”

Chan said the event would start with the soft launch of a Food Waste Prevention App for Malaysia to use by Green Hero.

Tan said the House of Trainings provides soft skills and personal development training.

“We believe strongly that in any business or entrepreneurship that people have gone into or new start-ups, it will still need some soft skills to go alongside other business skills. Things like on leadership skills, interpersonal skills, communication and presentation skills.

“They will then be able to translate what their business ideas are for other people to understand and accept the ideas. We strongly believe in a balance between both the hard skills and soft skills for our community of start-ups and new entrepreneurship.”

The speakers include Bob Lay (a master trainer from DMC), Teh Seang Seang (managing director of Yachou), Kao Pei Ting (director of KCK Consultancy Services), Ooi Wai Wai (deputy managing director from Kalyx Consultants), Hanna Low from Arch Academy, Howei Chang from Ayuh Bina, Andy Yeap from Fly Goh and Zhi Yang (representing Nick Ghey) from StayHi Asia.
