PENANG has been named one of the best places in the world to visit in 2027 by National Geographic, joining their annual Best of the World list of destinations highlighted for travellers planning their journeys for the year ahead.

Unveiled on Oct 20, Penang was the only destination in Malaysia and Southeast Asia featured on the list.

According to National Geographic, Penang’s selection followed an extensive nomination, research and reporting process, involving its travel experts and international editorial teams from Nat Geo Traveler.

The publication highlighted Penang’s distinctive character, shaped by the relationship between Penang Island and mainland Seberang Perai.

Travellers can explore the Unesco-listed streets of George Town, visit rainforest-fringed beaches and cross the Penang Strait to discover mainland communities, where traditional kampongs and mangrove-lined rivers coexist with modern industrial hubs.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, in a statement, said National Geographic’s internationally recognised brand, magazine and digital platforms, had long inspired audiences to explore the world, deepen their understanding of different places and care for the planet.

“The list of ‘The Best Places in the World to Travel to in 2027’ by National Geographic continues to spark curiosity and a spirit of discovery among travellers worldwide, encouraging them to seek out the distinctive experiences and attractions that destinations around the world have to offer,” he said.

Wong noted that this was not Penang’s first feature in National Geographic’s coverage. In 2025, the state was highlighted in a feature on the best islands in Southeast Asia for food, recognising its culinary heritage.

He said the latest recognition further strengthened Penang’s international tourism profile by showcasing the state’s distinctive character and experiences to a global audience.

“More importantly, this international recognition is a testament to the dedication, close collaboration and sustained efforts of Penang’s tourism industry stakeholders, who have worked tirelessly to develop and promote our destination,” Wong said.

He added that the recognition reflected the collective efforts of tourism operators and organisations working to advance Penang’s tourism industry.

“This honour belongs to all our tourism industry stakeholders. Their collective commitment, collaboration and perseverance have contributed to Penang’s continued development as a tourism destination,” he said.

Other destinations featured on the list include Vestland (Norway), Luxor (Egypt), Madison (Wisconsin), Puerto Rico, Dumfries and Galloway (Scotland), Niigata (Japan), Chengdu (China), the Pacific Coast Highway (California), Jaipur (India), Grenada, Salvador (Brazil), Cape Froward (Chile), Santander (Spain), Normandy (France), the Southern Ozarks (Missouri and Arkansas), Halifax (Nova Scotia), the Transcaucasian Trail (Armenia), Melbourne (Australia), Leipzig (Germany), Baltimore (Maryland), Malawi, Maya Ka’an (Mexico), Tricity (Poland), and Kuélap and Chachapoyas (Peru). Catalina Island was also featured as the Readers’ Choice selection.

The state government will continue working with tourism industry stakeholders to strengthen the state’s tourism sector, preserve its cultural and heritage assets, and attract more international visitors.
