PENANG’s theatre scene is set for a vibrant boost as original musical A Year to Love ❤️The Musical makes its world premiere at the Straits Quay One Academy Theatre (formerly Penang PAC) on April 24 and 25.
Presented by MYTH Penang, the production promises a return of Broadway-style musical theatre magic for local audiences.
The dramatic comedy centres on the “second act” of life, following Joe and Helen, a couple in their 50s adjusting to life after 31 years of raising their children. Set against the backdrop of Penang, what begins as a celebration of newfound freedom soon turns into a journey of self-discovery and personal ambition.

Helen dreams of opening a harbour-side café, while Joe aspires to sail the world. As their paths begin to diverge, the couple confronts insecurities and long-buried secrets, ultimately relying on their close-knit circle of friends to navigate a year filled with unexpected challenges.
The musical is co-written by Nancy P. Jenster and J.P. O’Byrne, featuring 15 original songs composed by Jenster and arranged by Richard Rudkins.
The creative team includes director Jackson Gleeson, artistic director Beth Webster, music director Mable Ooi, and costume and make-up designer Joelle Saint Arnoult.
Leading the cast are Lauren Tan as Helen and Donovan Ng as Joe, supported by a local ensemble including Prada Chen, Garu, Derick Tan, Su Lin Poh, Diana Saw Ling Siao, Geoffrey Bourton and Cat Thompson.

The performance schedule is as follows:
- Friday, April 24 at 8pm
- Saturday, April 25 at 2pm and 8pm
Tickets have been available since March 1 via the CloudJoi platform, with early-bird prices (limited time only) at RM55 and standard tickets at RM65.
As the production contains mature themes related to marital conflict and illness, it is recommended for mature teens and young adults aged 16 and above.
