Over century-old temple gets a shot in the arm

THE Penang government has approved a RM50,000 allocation to assist in the restoration of the 108-year-old Leong Hock Beoh temple in Penaga.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the temple, believed to be the oldest Chinese temple in Penaga, had applied for an allocation to refurbish the temple.

“My office has approved the RM50,000 allocation. It will be used to address termite infestation as well as to upgrade the toilets and other facilities at the temple.

“We are able to understand the situation better through this visit. The temple committee can approach the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), my special coordinator Lay Hock Peng or my office for assistance,” he said in his speech during his visit today.

Chow also thanked the temple committee for welcoming him and his team.

They spent about 30 minutes at the temple.

Among those present were Chow’s political secretary Teh Lai Heng, state Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, MBSP mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim.
