A SPECIAL reception was held this evening to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at St Giles the Wembley Hotel in George Town.

Hundreds of individuals from various backgrounds thronged the hotel to commemorate China which has built the world’s largest education, social security, and healthcare systems and achieved rapid economic growth and long-term stability.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow commended China for being a global leader that has tremendously contributed to the growth of numerous economic sectors across the globe.

“Your commitment to progress, innovation and human development has borne fruit, transformed your society and improved the lives of your citizens.

“The diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China were formed in 1974, and the People’s Republic of China has remained Malaysia’s top trade partner for the past 14 consecutive years, as mentioned by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, recently.

“Besides trade, the relations between the People’s Republic of China and Malaysia are also apparent in areas of education, tourism and cultural exchange,” Chow said in his speech during the dinner earlier.

Chow also recalled a visit he had with his delegation to China recently to take part in the China International Fair for Investment and Trade, while participating in the 30th anniversary celebration of the Xiamen-Penang sister city relationship.

“During our visit there from Sept 5 to 9, we were engaged in high-level dialogues and cultural exchanges, while benefitting from networking opportunities with various stakeholders.

“The visit has significantly solidified the bond between Penang and Xiamen, yielding mutual benefits for the regions,” he added.

Chow thanked the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang and the Xiamen Municipal Office for organising the fruitful visit.

Meanwhile, Chinese consul-general to Penang Zhou Youbin said that 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Malaysia.

“Over the past decade, the two countries have maintained frequent high-level interaction, continued to deepen political mutual trust and achieved fruitful outcomes in practical cooperation.

“We look forward to bolstering our ties in the future, as well as strengthening our bond in areas deemed important for the growth of both countries,” Zhou said.

On another matter, Chow quoted a recently published report by an English Daily that China has remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 14 consecutive years, with a total trade value of US$110.6 billion in 2022.

“The People’s Republic of China is an economic powerhouse in the world.

“Tonight, let us remember that the founding of a nation is not just a historical event for its citizens but also a testament to the power of the people’s determination and cooperation.

“As we join in the celebration, let us recommit ourselves to the values of friendship and cooperation; and let us reaffirm our commitment to a world where nations can thrive in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect,” Chow added.

Also present during the dinner were former Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang, Deputy Finance Minister II Steven Sim Chee Keong and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
