Penang moving forward to address water issue

AFTER many years, Penang, Perak and the Water, Land and Natural Resources Ministry are now working together to resolve the Sungai Perak Raw Water Transfer Scheme (SPRWTS) issue.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said the corporation would pursue the matter quickly.

“We have met the minister and briefed him on the urgency of having this additional raw water source.

“The last meeting was in March 2015, when Barisan Nasional was the administrator of the Federal Government. That was how long they (Barisan) took just to start a meeting,” he told a press conference today.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state was looking forward to resolving the issue.

“We are not able to provide any information now, as the meeting has just started.

“Negotiation will probably take a year or so, while implementation may take a few more years,” Chow said.

He added that it was crucial to address the SPRWTS issue so that Penang would not have to solely depend on Sungai Muda as the state’s only source of water supply.
