Penang strengthens semiconductor role at summit

PENANG’s position as a key contributor to the regional semiconductor industry was underscored following the successful conclusion of the Semiconductor Asia Summit 2026 recently.

 

Representatives from leading global companies such as Intel, AMD, Micron, NXP Semiconductors, GlobalFoundries, Altera, and Oppstar were among those in attendance, alongside key stakeholders from across ASEAN.

 

Special advisor (Industry) to the Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh, J Philip Vincent, described the summit as a timely and strategic platform that reflects Penang’s growing importance in the global semiconductor landscape.

 

“Penang is not just participating in the global semiconductor ecosystem, we are helping shape its future. This two-day summit demonstrates our readiness to lead in innovation, talent development, and regional collaboration,” he said.

 

“With initiatives such as the Semiconductor Asia Summit, Penang is set to remain at the forefront of technological advancement and innovation in the region,” he added.

 

Vincent added that the strong turnout and high-level discussions signal increasing confidence in Penang as a hub for advanced manufacturing and semiconductor innovation.

“The summit is expected to catalyse further collaborations between industry, academia, and government, while reinforcing Asia’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

 

Throughout the summit, participants engaged in keynote sessions and panel discussions covering critical topics such as artificial intelligence in chip design, the evolution of semiconductor supply chains, and emerging applications in automotive and industrial technologies.

 

Meanwhile, Jagdeep who graced the summit on March 6 at Iconic Majorie, stressed that the state government will continue to strengthen infrastructure, talent development, and sustainability efforts to ensure the state remains competitive in the global semiconductor industry.

 

Jagdeep also emphasised human capital development as a key priority, stressing that the future semiconductor workforce must be equipped with a broader and more advanced set of skills.
