THE state government remains committed to uplifting the tourism and hospitality sector, with the aim of driving it to even greater heights, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow shared this at the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Biennial Dinner 2025, themed ‘Mingle and Jingle 5-Glitz’, celebrating its 24th anniversary at St Giles The Wembley Hotel today.

“Penang’s hotel and tourism industry has made a strong comeback since the Covid-19 pandemic, moving from ‘survival mode to full speed ahead’ thanks to the dedication of industry players.

“With a full calendar of international and regional events, from ASEAN programmes and federal initiatives to Penang’s own festivals, the state is buzzing with activity.

“Hotels are full, restaurants are busy, and visitors keep coming back. We want to see even greater success for your hotels from heritage shophouses to beachfront resorts,” he said.

Chow said the past two years had brought “renewed energy, a bounce-back spirit, and a boldness in how we welcome the world.”

He stressed that improving Penang’s tourism and hospitality sector requires strong collaboration between the government, private sector, hoteliers, and local communities.

Chow noted that the state always welcomes feedback, even if it is critical or uncomfortable, as it is necessary to hear it. He cited MAH Penang Chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh as someone who never hesitates to voice the challenges faced by the industry.

“Our goal is not only to hear your feedback, but to respond to it to overcome challenges and drive the sector forward,” he said.

According to Chow, the Penang2030 vision is not solely a government initiative but a whole-of-society approach.

“We succeed only when we listen, adapt, and act on what the people, including our tourism stakeholders, are saying.

“So, if you think something is not working or could be improved, let us know. I promise we are listening.

“To every hotelier, manager, front desk officer, chef, cleaner, concierge, and everyone behind the scenes, thank you. You are the face of Penang to the world,” Chow added.

Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman and Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the tourism industry must work together with a bold and unified vision as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

“The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has set an ambitious yet achievable target for 2025, aiming for 43 million visitors, with a per capita spend of RM6,600, generating total tourism receipts of RM283.8 billion.

“This will require coordinated public-private partnerships, strong promotional campaigns, and of course, the continued excellence of the hospitality sector-led by associations like MAH,” Yeoh said.
