Penang’s digital chess tournament ends successfully

THE recent Penang Online Chess Festival 2020, organised by the Penang Chess Association (PCA) and endorsed by the Penang State Sports Council, concluded smoothly.

 

The week-long series of seven online tournaments attracted an estimated 800 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, India and Australia.

 

PCA president See Swee Sie thanked Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee and the Penang State Sports Council for their support of chess activities in Penang.

 

“We would also like to thank the ZOG Group for their sponsorship and all sponsors and supporters,” said See.

See is thankful for all the support given by many quarters to the Penang Chess Association.

 

Joel Pimentel emerged champion in the Open category and pocketed RM1,200 prize money. Second place went to Azarya Jodi Setyaki, who bagged RM900, while third place winner was Nouri Alekhine, who won RM750.

 

Chua Jia-Tien was adjudged the best lady player while Jimmy Liew Chee Meng was the best veteran (above 55) player. Both were awarded RM300 each.

 

In the Position category, Stevarky clinched the title, beating Aurelia Vania Winanda and Vaio Alfitrah Hazaraqi to second and third places respectively. They won RM300, RM200 and RM150 respectively.

Open: 1. Joel Pimentel (7 ½ pts), 2.  Azarya Jodi Setyaki (7 ½), 3. Nouri Alekhine (6 ½).

Best Lady: 1. Chua Jia-Tien (5).

Best Veteran (>55): 1. Jimmy Liew Chee Meng (5 ½).

Position Challenger: 1. Stevanky (9), 2. Aurellia Vania Winanda (8), 3. Vaio Alfitrah Hazaraqi (7 ½).

Under-18 boys: 1. Joshua Ng Shao Wen (6), 2. Chong Huan Yan (5 ½), 3. Dhamin Pathamanathan (5 ½).

Under-18 girls: 1. Nadila Merika Agnesia (6), 2. Ong Coshinne (5), 3. Nala Ghassani (5).

Under-15 boys: 1. Carson Goh Eu Zien (6 ½), 2. Godwin Liem (6 ½), 3. Clarence Tie Siou Guan (6).

Under-15 girls: 1. Salwa Nadia Maharani (6), 2. Nicole Khor Qiao Wen (5), 3. Celine Ong (5).

Under-12 boys: 1. Satria Duta Cahaya (6 ½), 2. Teh Rui Gen (6 ½), 3. Ian Yong Je Pin (6).

Under-12 girls: 1. Li Joy Ching (5 ½), 2. Claire Wang Xin Ran (5), 3. Chan Jing Ying (5).

Under-10 boys: 1. Steven Tan (6), 2. Sai Siddharth (6), 3. Vinesh Venkata Narayanaswamy (6).

Under-10 girls: 1. Abby Tan Li Shuen (5), 2. Ng Jing Xuan Alyssa (4), 3. Yvonne Yeoh Xin Ying (4).
