PGC organises first energy management course for state agencies

THE Penang Green Council (PGC), which has been instrumental in the implementation of green initiatives in the state, has come up with another programme this time, called the ‘Energy Management Course for Public Building’.

The two-day course is supported by the office of state Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari who also chairs the ‘Penang Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) Taskforce.

During the opening ceremony of the event today at the Neo+ Hotel, Zairil said Penang is in the process of drafting a framework for the strategies and goals regarding RE and EE.

He said the framework encompasses the sectoral and industrial policies in Penang which can be implemented by 2030.

“This is also in line with one of the themes in the Penang2030 vision, which emphasises integrating urban services with smart technology.

“The ‘Energy Management Course for Public Building’ is the first of its kind programme held in Penang.

“It is aimed at giving exposure as well as enhancing the state government’s capacity for energy management of public buildings.

“We hope this course will help to enlighten the government personnel as well as to practise (energy management) at government buildings,” Zairil added.

Zairil also shared that the Malaysian government has committed itself to the Paris Agreement to help reduce carbon intensity by 45% by 2030.

“To achieve this, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resource targets to generate RE by 31% by 2025 and 40% by 2035 via various green energy renewal efforts,” he said.

Some 30 participants from various state agencies are participating in the course.

The course is conducted by Abdul Rahman Abdullah, the senior mechanical engineer from the Malaysian Public Works Department (Environment and Energy Efficiency) headquarters.

Also present were PGC general manager Josephine Tan and PGC project manager Dr Ng Shin Wei.
