PGC rewards green citizens

WHAT if you can turn your waste into useful items? Well, the Penang Green Council (PGC), through its collaboration with two companies, is bringing good news for all green citizens out there.

PGC general manager Josephine Tan said the PGC has initiated a green reward programme to complement the Penang Green Citizen programme.

“PGC will be collaborating with Riiicycle Apps developed by Riiicycle Tech Sdn Bhd and international retailer of beauty products, L’OCCITANE Malaysia.

“The participants in the Penang Green Citizen programme will be able to enjoy all these benefits; they just need to put forth some efforts in collecting the recyclable things.

“We encourage all Penangites to take part in this reward programme, bring or send your clean recyclable items to the selected locations,’’ said Tan during a press conference today.

The programme (Penang Green Citizens) was launched by PGC in 2009 to encourage individuals and communities to give their commitment to make Penang a cleaner, greener, safer, healthier and happier city by pledging to uphold at least one out of 10 key initiatives.

These include save water, conserve energy, reduce single use plastics, bring own food container/ water bottle, practise 5R – refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle – to extend the lifespan of Pulau Burung Landfill.

Other initiatives are to use public transport or carpool to reduce carbon footprint, support anti-smoking initiative, stop littering, stop open burning and create a caring society.

Riiicycle Tech Sdn Bhd director Chew Chin Huat said early birds (first 1,000 Green Citizens) are entitled for 300 Riiipoints.

“New users will be awarded 99 Riiipoints upon registration while existing Penang Green
Citizens will be credited with another extra 100 points to redeem vouchers and enjoy other
benefits from the participating merchants.(duration May 2020 – December 2021)

“The participating merchants are Arabica Estate, Simply Leafy, Jobelle Skin Solution, OWL Bulk Store, Macallum Connoisseurs Coffee, Digi, Celcom, Global Nature, Mikugraphy, Gao Enough Tea, Dr House Home Inspection, LSL Easy Life, Silver Owl Production, Tesco, Thong Thai Fusion, CMYK Interior Design, Xi Meng Ding Taiwan Delight, Kenko Sushi and Recyclable Home Pickup,’’ Chew added.

Under L’OCCITANE’s ‘Big Little Things Recycling Program’, individuals can bring their empty bottles of beauty and care products to three participating stores located at Gurney Plaza, Gurney Paragon Mall and Queensbay Mall.

L’OCCITANE Malaysia (Gurney Plaza, Penang) retail manager Tan Ai Ling said participants would receive RM10 L’OCCITANE cash voucher for every 40th and 70th bottles accumulated.

“The phase one of this programme will take place starting from Aug 1 to Oct 31 while phase two starts from Jan 1 to March 31 next year.

Meanwhile, state executive councillor for Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Phee Boon Poh said circular economy plays an important role in helping us to reduce waste and ensuring the sustainability of our resources.

“There are more than 22,000 citizens who have pledged as Penang Green Citizens over the years. Thus, we are calling for more Penangites to pledge and join us in this green movement to reduce waste and be a responsible citizen,’’ Poh added.
