PIFF 2019, more than just about food

THE Penang International Food Festival (PIFF) 2019 is back for the third time and it is more than just about food.

Slated to be held from April 13 to 28, the Penang Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the annual festival is to promote the state as the culinary capital of Malaysia and a food paradise of Asia.

“We’ll have three major events, namely Street Food Festival, Taste of Penang and Penang Seafood Galore. There will be other mini festivals, food trails, dining experiences, a sharing session and competitions,” Yeoh told a press conference in Komtar today.

“Food lovers can take a deeper dive into Penang’s culinary landscape through two food walks and three dining experiences. These are ticketed events.

“The food walks provide visitors with an immersive food adventure by discovering the history of food and local culture in places that locals would recommend.

Tourists will get to discover the unique history of Penang through the food festival, says Yeoh

“They get to discover the unique history of Penang as they taste its food, walk among the buildings, and listen to fascinating stories as they explore Pulau Tikus Market in the island and Raja Uda Apollo Market over in the mainland.

“For the three dining experience, they are anything but ordinary. From witnessing a story come alive through food and dance, dining aboard the iconic ferry amid a stunning backdrop of the sun setting on the horizon and to learning from the master in an exquisite wine pairing retreat.

“I believe that food tour is a creative way of connecting people to each other and the food in local neighbourhood while the unique dining experience is a great chance for visitors to experience Penang from a brand.”

Also present at the press conference were Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan, TLM Event managing director Jack Wong, Rain Garden manager Sean Ho, Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa Penang assistant outlet manager Ahmad Al-Afiz, Rapid Ferry Penang head Osmah Amir and business development officer Siti Nor Zamzafila.

Ooi said the whole purpose of the event was to let the tourists and locals experience the beauty of Penang food.

“It will be a good experience for the tourists to know more about Penang and experience the variety of choices of food here,” he said.
