THE Penang government has been actively carrying out promotional and marketing campaigns to develop domestic tourism in the state amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin told the State Legislative Assembly in Dewan Sri Pinang today that the estimated expenditure for the promotional and marketing programmes is RM3.5 million.

“The tourism sector is one of the economic sectors hardest hit by the pandemic coupled with the implementation of movement control order (MCO) early this year.

“Fortunately, the tourism sector is allowed to operate during the current phase of recovery movement control order (RMCO),” Yeoh said in his oral reply to a question by Zolkifly Lazim (PPBM -Telok Bahang) regarding the steps taken by the state government to rejuvenate the tourism industry.

“Therefore, priority is given to revitalising the tourism sector with the focus on the domestic tourism market.

“In fact, the state has been undertaking various initiatives to promote its domestic tourism.

“The state is using electronic media, print media, campaigns, travel package deals, tourism and trade fairs to promote its tourism.”
