THE Yu Lan Celebration Organisation in Jalan Pasar is planning to instal a roof structure along a lane between its premises and the Bukit Mertajam Tua Pek Kong Temple.

It is learnt that the estimated cost of the project is RM800,000.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state welcomed the organisation to submit its plan to the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) for approval.

The Yu Lan Celebration Organisation expressed hope that the roof structure, if it materialises, could shelter visitors from rain and shine.

He was accompanied by state Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng, Penang Welfare and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee, and Yu Lan Celebration Organisation chairman Datuk Seri Peh Weng Kim.

At the premises, devotees were seen paying homage to a giant paper effigy of the King of Hades (Tai Su Yeah in Hokkien).

The 8.53m giant paper effigy was set up and placed at the site for the Hungry Ghost Festival. It will be wheeled out to the middle of Jalan Pasar to be burned tomorrow (Aug 14), signifying the final ritual to send off departed loved ones.

After the short visit to the Yu Lan Celebration Organisation’s premises, Chow and his team toured the Bukit Mertajam town.
