PADANG Kota assemblymember Chow Kon Yeow has urged Kedah Road Flats residents to regularly pay maintenance fees so that they can enjoy the benefit of having well-maintained common property facilities.

Recently, some 1,000 residents had to endure a lift breakdown as four of the lifts malfunctioned and the matter was brought to Chow’s attention.

Upon appeal from the Residents Association of Kedah Road Flats, Chow acted promptly by extending RM10,000 (which is a special allocation from his constituency funds) as an immediate assistance.

“With the cooperation of several parties, one of the two lifts was restored on Jan 30 by replacing the ‘door card’, but the other lift is still not working as the door motor has stopped functioning,” Chow said during a press conference with the Kedah Road Flats residents and joint management body (JMB) on Feb 13.

“The cost for the restoration work on the two lifts is RM16,457. The cost for the repair work of the other two lifts is expected to be around RM20,352.

“With regards to this, the Kedah Road Flats Residents Association has applied for the Penang Housing Maintenance Maximum 80% Fund (TPM80PP) to the Penang Development Corporation (the developer of Kedah Road Flats),” Chow added.

Apart from that, Chow said more issues cropped up few days later when the water pump also stopped working.

To make matters worse, the spare pumps were also not functioning.

“This damage would have caused the residents to suffer without water supply for 48 hours or more, but with the cooperation of all parties it was successfully repaired at a cost of RM1,600,” he said.

Therefore, Chow, who is also the exco for Local government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation, urged all residents to cooperate with JMB by paying their monthly maintenance fees.

“Up to now, there is an outstanding amount of RM115,940 though the flats has the lowest maintenance fees,” he said.

Also present were deputy chairman of the Residents Association of Kedah Road Flats Abdul Wahab Shaikh Mydin and former JMB chairman Tay Chye Hock.
