THE concept of recycle is the most perfect approach to promote waste segregation.

“This mind set will reduce the amount of waste to be dispose,” Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said when launching the waste segregation at source programme and safety campaign at SMJK(C) Sacred Heart in Balik Pulau this morning.

He added that for the first five months of 2018, some 98,425 metric ton of waste from Penang island was disposed at Pulau Burong waste disposal site.

“This is equivalent to 651 metric ton of waste per day,” he said, stressing that the rate of recycling till May this year is about 30.22% .

Yew hopes the recycle rate will continue to increase yearly to give a positive impact to the environment.

“This will also help the state government from the need to find a new waste disposal site in future,” he said.

Since 2011, MBPP had actively launched many activities and competition working together with schools, among them which is the ‘Green School Award’ , ‘Reduce Use of Plastic Bags’ and others.

“We are also currently looking at the ‘No plastic straw’ concept,” Yew said.

Also present was assemblymember for Batu Maung, Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain.
