INVESTMENT in workplace sports and recreational facilities is no longer optional but a necessity for companies seeking to attract and retain talent, says, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Sim Tze Tzin.
Speaking to the media after officiating the opening ceremony of Dexcom Malaysia’s newly built sports complex in Batu Kawan today, Sim emphasised that employee well-being must be prioritised alongside Malaysia’s rapid industrial growth.

“Industries are expanding quickly, but facilities for workers such as gyms and sports courts are still lacking. Companies must shift their mindset and invest in the health of their employees,” he said.
Sim noted that younger generations, particularly Millennials (Gen Y) and Gen Z, place strong emphasis on work-life balance, with access to fitness facilities increasingly influencing employment decisions.
“In some cases, having a gym or sports facility is a requirement for them when choosing a workplace,” he added.
“Because the talent pool is getting smaller, companies are competing more to hire workers. Providing facilities like gyms and sports amenities can give employers an advantage in attracting talent.
“Beyond improving physical health and productivity, sports help to strengthen relationships among employees,” he added.

Sim, who is also the Bayan Baru MP, drew a parallel with Members of Parliament, noting that although debates in parliament can be intense, playing sports together helps build understanding and unity across political differences.
“The same applies in the workplace. There may be disagreements in the office, but sports can bring people together again,” he said.
The newly launched facility by Dexcom features both indoor amenities such as multipurpose courts, gym and outdoor facilities including a football field.

Also present were InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian, Dexcom Malaysia vice-president of operations Sayron Ruiz, Human Resources director Thiagarajan Veeran, as well as other dignitaries.
