THE Penang Tech-Dome, expected to be ready by 2015, is a learning hub introduced by Penang Tech Centre (PTC) which aims to be the platform promoting a culture of innovation as well as discovering the wonders of technology.

“Our vision is to widen the learning scope of youngsters, to make them think out of the box,” said PTC director Yap Soo Huey at a press conference introducing the “Magic of Science” roadshows recently.

Yap, who is Pulau Tikus assemblymember, said a quick response is needed as Malaysia’s standards of science and technology continue to decline compared to Thailand and Vietnam.

Yap also extended her deepest appreciation to the malls that sponsored the venue for the roadshows and trainers from various colleges in Penang.

Among the six malls involved are Gurney Plaza, Queensbay Mall and First Avenue Mall while the colleges that lent a helping hand includes KDU, Inti, Disted and Seameo, USM.

Children up to 15 years may participate in various activities at the respective booths on the event days at six different venues around the island for free.

They are however required to pre-register for the sessions as places are limited.

“They will be able to experience hands-on activities and spark the interest in pursuing studies and career in the respective fields,” said PTC general manager Richard Chung Chok Yin.

As the state government granted the use of the Komtar Geodisic Dome to be the venue for Penang Tech-Dome project, Chung hoped the public and corporate sector will come forward to support financially as their donations will be tax exempted.

Also present were Seameo Recsam Science Education specialist Hideo Nakano and representatives of the six malls.
