THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) launched its first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) project in Balik Pulau today.
MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang, who officiated the MAKERSPACE @Balik Pulau at Komplexs this morning, said he hoped the project would benefit the youths in the rural areas.
“We’ve been active with the STEAM projects in town. This is the first time we are involved with the project in the rural areas,” he said.
Personnel from Intel Technology Sdn Bhd, Balik Pulau Polytechnic and Penang Cluster were also involved with the project at Makerspace, a 300sq ft area designated by MBPP for carrying STEAM activities by engaging the local community.
Yew said Intel provided 40 laptops while Balik Pulau Polytechnic sent their expertise to guide the youths.
“It is the first for the South West district. Presently, two schools and 26 groups are taking part in the STEAM activities organised at the Makerspace.”
Among those present at the launching were Intel Technology Sdn Bhd government affairs director Amran Mohamad Dom, Polyteknik Balik Pulau director Abdul Hanif Mustapha and Penang Science Cluster director Datuk Yoon Chon Leong.
Yew also said the council has plans to utilise the compound of the MBPP’s Komplexs to make it more vibrant, as presently the place is quite lifeless in the evening.
“We hope to engage the local traders and the public soon, for suggestions and ideas to make this come true,” he commented.
