STEM Showcase 2023 to inspire the next generation of innovators

FOLLOWING the success of the STEM Showcase 2022 last year, STEM Showcase 2023 will be held at two venues this year – one in Penang island, and another in Seberang Perai.

Last year, STEM Showcase 2022 in Penang island attracted more than 10,000 visitors and many schools requested for such a showcase to also be held in Seberang Perai.

Penang STEM general manager Richard Chung said, therefore, the STEM Showcase 2023 would be held at two venues this year.

“The first event will be at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College (Batu Kawan) on May 12 and 13. This event at UOW in Batu Kawan will be managed by Tech Dome Penang.

“We have decided to hold the first STEM Showcase 2023 event in Batu Kawan because Batu Kawan is a new industrial hub on the mainland,” he said in his opening speech during the media launch at Tech Dome Penang today.

He said the STEM Showcase originated as a Makers Fair which was organised by Han Chiang High School back in 2019. The high school invited Penang STEM to co-host and make it a bigger event the next year, but the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

He added that the STEM Showcase 2022 was the first event held after the pandemic, and it was successful.

Thanking the sponsors, Chung said the organisation was grateful to Greatech Technology Berhad for stepping forward to be the Executive Sponsor for the upcoming Batu Kawan event, with a sponsorship of RM100,000.

“Special thanks also go out to our strategic partners – Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Institution of Engineering and Technology Malaysia, and Technological Association Malaysia.

“The sponsorship funds will be used to support bus transports to ferry students from 18 primary and 18 secondary schools on the mainland to attend the event at UOW in Batu Kawan.”

Chung added that Penang Math Platform would be spearheading the second STEM Showcase 2023 at Han Chiang High School.

“Both Flextronics Technology and Intel Technology have again come forward to support the event as Platinum and Gold Sponsors, with contributions of RM50,000 and RM30,000 respectively.

The STEM Showcase 2023 event at Han Chiang High School will be held on Aug 25 and 26.

“Both events would not have been possible without the endorsement of the Penang Education Department. We are grateful for its support,” Chung said.

He also welcomed the support of other corporate sponsors who wished to sponsor schools to join the many workshops and competitions to be held during the STEM Showcase 2023 event at Han Chiang High School.

Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy congratulated Penang STEM, Tech Dome Penang and Penang Math Platform for taking the lead in jointly organising the STEM Showcase 2023.

Dr Ramasamy said the Batu Kawan industrial zone continued to draw record-breaking investments and re-investments from existing investors.

“There will be continuous demand for talent on the mainland.

“I thank the Penang Education Department for endorsing the event this year, and I also take the opportunity to thank UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College (Batu Kawan), Han Chiang High School, Greatech Technology Berhad, Flextronics Technology, Intel Technology, and the strategic partners for the effort.

“Events like these are important to support the state’s endeavour to spark the interest of students in STEM-learning.

“We want to inspire more students to pursue academic studies and, subsequently, careers in STEM-related fields,” he said.

Also present were Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi, UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College vice-chancellor Prof Dr Chong Beng Keok, Han Chiang High School principal Kung Bee Lee, Greatech Integration chief financial officer Koay Li Ling, and Intel Technology senior director Dr Ngoo Seong Boon.
