Sungai Pinang folks receive CNY goodies

SUNGAI Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim is keeping her tradition of distributing festive goodies to the B40 families during the Chinese New Year festival.

Lim, together with her team members, handed over a total of 230 goodie bags to those deserving families yesterday. This year’s CNY falls on Feb 1.

During the ceremony, Lim was also accompanied by Nova Land director Annie Choo, who presented ‘angpows’ to all the recipients.

“We have only invited some of the recipients for the ceremony.

“Later, another 220 goodies bags together with the ‘angpows’ will be sent to the homes of the families whom we have selected for this programme,” Lim said while thanking Choo for sponsoring the red packets.

The festive goodies contained 2kg of rice packet, red dates, biscuits, and CNY calligraphy symbolising prosperity.

During her speech at the event, Lim encouraged the elderly to keep themselves busy by engaging in healthy community activities.

“You can put to use your skills by taking part in the programmes related with the well-being of the society rather than letting them fade away.

“For instance, I have with me my team members who are above 60 years old and are actively involved in all our programmes.

“I would like to also tell everyone not to marginalise the elderly and let them age actively,” she added.

On a separate matter, Lim also said the state government hopes to extend the ‘First Support Point’ counters to the religious houses as well as the residential premises.

“Domestic violence is something that we should take seriously because there must be a support point whereby the victims can go and seek help immediately,” she said.
