Taiwanese flight returns to Penang, receives pleasant reception

PENANG warmly welcomed the return of Taiwanese visitors who landed at the Penang International Airport (PIA) earlier today via China Airlines.

Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer (CEO) Ooi Chok Yan, who was among the dignitaries present to receive the passengers, said Penang would be welcoming more Taiwanese to its shore.

Ooi said this was the first flight arriving in Penang from Taiwan Taoyuan Airport (TPE) since the reopening of Taiwan’s international border.

China Airlines flew some 60 to 70 passengers, including Taiwanese members of the media, to Penang.

“The Starlux and China Airlines will be flying at the frequency of four times per week from these two destinations, Penang and Taiwan.

“Penang and Taiwan are connected in many ways, for instance, food, nature, culture and heritage.

“These two destinations are also linked through the George Town Festival’s ‘Spotlight Taiwan: Isle to Isle’ exhibition that took place in Penang.

“This exhibition has sparked potential collaborations between the local and Taiwanese artists,” Ooi said during a press conference held at the reception.

Ooi also added that the connection between Penang and Taiwan has brought in noticeable investment from Taiwan to Penang which has helped to accelerate the recovery of the economy.

Apart from that, Ooi also ensured Penang is a safe destination for everyone.

“The state government has been working tirelessly to ensure everyone’s safety by implementing preventive measures.

“We are confident that Penang is a safe, convenient and friendly destination suitable for ages. Penang is ever ready to welcome you,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ooi also shared that the number of international direct flights arriving and departing from the PIA since January has increased from two (12) to three digits (140 over).

“This includes the recent addition of international direct flights, namely Air Asia’s Penang-Bali flight as well as Firefly’s Penang-Banda Aceh flight.

“I believe there will be steady growth in the frequency of direct flights. And it also depends on the availability as well as the policy of the respective cities,” Ooi said.

Also present were PIA senior airport manager Mohd Nadzim Hashim, China Airlines general manager Penang branch Mou Wen Po and Lion Travel Service assistant vice-president Lily Lin.

It is learned that the plane flew some 60 to 70 passengers, including Taiwanese members of the media, to Penang.
