WMSPI senior principal Lau Chong Beng casts a clear vision for orchestrating the Christmas Concert.

IN the heart of Penang, a profound narrative is unfolding at Wesley Methodist School Penang International (WMSPI). This December, the school’s campus will be transformed into a beacon of music, unity, and philanthropy with its inaugural “Harmony of Hope” Christmas Concert.

Orchestrated by senior principal Lau Chong Beng and his team of visionary educators, this event, scheduled on Dec 9 from 7pm, is set to redefine the traditional Christmas concert by infusing it with a deep sense of purpose and community spirit.

Our school was built with more than just education in mind—it’s about forming character and a sense of purpose. Harmony of Hope – A Christmas Concert embodies this mission by blending the musical talents of our students with our dedication to giving back. – Lau Chong Beng.”

In an exclusive interview with Buletin Mutiara, Lau shared insights into the concert and the ethos of WMSPI. “Our school was built with more than just education in mind—it’s about forming character and a sense of purpose,” he explained. “Harmony of Hope – A Christmas Concert embodies this mission by blending the musical talents of our students with our dedication to giving back.”

Since WMSPI opened its doors in 2018, it has swiftly evolved into a hub of holistic education, combining academic rigour with compassionate outreach.

“Our goal was always to create more than just a learning environment. We wanted to foster a culture where empathy, innovation, and community service are as integral as academic learning,” Lau stated, reflecting on the school’s journey.

The Harmony of Hope concert epitomises this ethos. It’s not merely a showcase of the students’ burgeoning artistic talents but a vibrant testament to the school’s commitment to societal betterment.

“Through this concert, we aim to bring to life the real spirit of Christmas – a time for giving, sharing, and spreading hope.

“The school’s pursuit of excellence is evident not just in its curriculum but also in its approach to community involvement. Our students are learning the power of their actions, and the impact they can have. This concert is a testament to that – it’s them applying their skills and passion for a greater cause,” he elaborates.

In selecting Charis Hospice Penang as the beneficiary, WMSPI aligns its efforts with an organisation that mirrors its values.

“Charis Hospice represents the kind of impact we aspire to make in the community. Their dedication to providing palliative care with dignity to patients of all races deeply resonates with our mission,” explained Lau.

This collaboration is a poignant reminder of the school’s philosophy that success transcends academic achievements and is deeply rooted in the positive change one brings to the lives of others.

Lau says WMSPI is committed to developing all-rounded individuals.

The Harmony of Hope concert is set against the backdrop of WMSPI’s innovative STREAM curriculum, which blends Science, Technology, Reading & Writing, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

WMPSI believes in nurturing each aspect of a child’s intellect and creativity. Its curriculum is designed to prepare students not just for the challenges of tomorrow but also to instil in them a sense of moral and social responsibility.

Under Lau’s guidance, the school has seen remarkable achievements. Its students have excelled in various arenas, from securing top honours in international competitions like the World Scholars Cup at Yale University to earning accolades in local arts events. These successes underscore WMSPI’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.

We hope to not only raise funds but also to foster a sense of community spirit and awareness about the work of Charis Hospice.”

The concert also serves as a platform for practical learning experiences. Students are involved in every aspect of the event, from planning to execution.

“This hands-on approach is crucial in developing skills like leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. It’s about empowering our students to be the change-makers of tomorrow,” Lau emphasises.

Reflecting on the evolving educational landscape amidst rapid technological advancement, Lau remains steadfast in upholding the school’s core values.

He said in a world where digitalisation and AI are omnipresent, their commitment to ethical principles and character education is unwavering. WMSPI aims to harness these advancements positively, ensuring its students are future-ready in every sense of the word.

Looking beyond the immediate goals of fundraising, Lau envisions the Harmony of Hope concert as a catalyst for broader community engagement and awareness.

“Our ambition is to raise between RM80,000 and RM100,000, but more significantly, to kindle a spirit of unity and compassion that extends well beyond the concert night.

“We hope to not only raise funds but also to foster a sense of community spirit and awareness about the work of Charis Hospice.”

This ethos of nurturing and character building is at the core of WMSPI’s philosophy.

“Education is not just about imparting knowledge. I strongly believe in the ABC of education: It’s about shaping attitudes, behaviours, and characters. It’s these elements that truly define a person’s success and their contribution to society,” Lau passionately states.

As a Penang native and a veteran in the field of education, Lau, including his previous role as the principal of Methodist Boys School, understands the critical role schools play in shaping future generations.

“Education is the most potent tool for positive change. It has the power to transform lives, communities, and ultimately, the world. At WMSPI, we are committed to being a part of this transformative journey.

“We hope to not only raise funds but also to foster a sense of community spirit and awareness about the work of Charis Hospice,” he reiterates.

The Harmony of Hope concert is a celebration of this commitment, a showcase of the school’s values, and a reflection of its dedication to community service. It invites the wider community to partake in an evening that promises not just entertainment but also an opportunity to contribute to a noble cause.

As for the future, Lau envisions WMSPI as a beacon of innovative and compassionate education.

“We want our students to leave WMSPI not just with knowledge but with a sense of duty to their community and the world. Harmony of Hope is a milestone in this journey,” he concludes.
