A landmark Indian theatre show in Penang in November

ARE you a theatre enthusiast interested in Indian theatre?

If so, the ‘Spice and Curry’ theatre show has the answer.

Dubbed as the first Indian theatre show in Penang, it is a performance produced by two active non-governmental organisations (NGOs), namely My Penang Creative and Tripple I Production.

It will be held on Nov 4 (3pm and 8.30pm) and Nov 5 (8.30pm) at iBOX Theatre by Triple I Production House in Batu Uban.

Spice and Curry producer and artistic director Fariza Ariffin said this pilot show will be a great introduction to Indian theatre.

Fariza said this pilot show will be a great introduction to Indian theatre.

“Our aim is to stage the first Indian plays that use diverse Indian languages.

“There will be three plays in Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam languages with English subtitles on the screen during the show.

“There will also be performances in Telegu, Gujarati and Punjabi. Thus, this diversity makes the show a great exposure to all races in our community in Penang,” Fariza told Buletin Mutiara during an interview session recently.

According to Fariza, during the show, six Indian performances in different languages and ethnic styles will entertain the audience for an hour and a half.

“The six Indian performances include ‘Live Tabla’ and ‘Dhol’ accompanied with Indian dance performances, Family Story (Tamil language), Best Friends (Hindi language), Neighbours Story (Malayalam language), Duo dance (Gujarati team and Telegu) and Poem (Punjabi language).

“The special thing about this theatre show is the diversity of Indian languages involved. We have Punjabi, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati and Telugu.

“Altogether, we have around 13 performers, including musicians, who will perform at the upcoming Indian theatre.

“And our target is not the Indian community only. Instead, we want everybody to come and enjoy the show. It offers music, dance, comedy, drama and so on, making it an enjoyable experience suitable for all ages,” added Fariza.

At the end of the interview, Fariza said the Indian theatre is very rare in Penang compared to other types of theatres.

“So, I really hope for an encouraging response from the public.

“During the show, I hope the audience can feel the excitement as we feel,” she said.

Tickets for the show are priced at RM35 per entry. The public can purchase tickets through the QR code provided in the poster above or contact 018-467 2794 for any inquiries.
