THE Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi celebrates a historic milestone tonight as it marks its 215th Winter Solstice anniversary, reaffirming its enduring role as a pillar of heritage, unity and community service in Penang.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiates the anniversary dinner, describes Dongzhi as a meaningful season that reflects “renewal, balance and togetherness”, values that have sustained the kongsi across more than two centuries.

“For 215 years, this kongsi has endured as a living institution of mutual care and continuity across generations, contributing quietly yet meaningfully to Penang’s social fabric,” he said.

A key highlight of the evening is the launch of the kongsi’s new historical publication, which Chow describes as more than a record of the past.

“Carefully researched and verified, the publication goes beyond chronicling history; it distils the values, discipline and perseverance that sustained the community through change, ensuring its legacy remains relevant for generations to come,” he said.

Chow notes that the kongsi’s ability to honour tradition while responding to present-day needs continues to define its relevance, particularly through cultural education, welfare initiatives and strong intergenerational engagement.

“This balance resonates with Penang’s own development approach, safeguarding heritage while preparing decisively for the future,” he says, linking the kongsi’s values with the Penang2030 vision.

Reflecting on the state’s progress this year, Chow said Penang has moved decisively “from planning to delivery”, with several long-awaited infrastructure projects advancing into implementation.

“These include the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit, the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway and the expansion of Penang International Airport to strengthen long-term connectivity,” he said.

He adds that Penang has also rolled out major initiatives under Penang Silicon Design @5km+ to deepen the state’s technology ecosystem and strengthen the local talent pipeline.

“Importantly, a landmark water supply agreement with Perak has been concluded, resolving a long-standing issue and securing Penang’s future water needs,” Chow said, noting that progress has been driven by collective effort across state agencies and strong support from civil society.

At the federal level, Chow welcomes the recent Cabinet reshuffle and expresses confidence in continued cooperation.

“We look forward to close collaboration to ensure the people can truly feel the outcomes of reform,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Year of the Horse, Chow expresses optimism and confidence, describing the zodiac sign as a symbol of energy, resilience and forward momentum.

“The Horse reflects the mindset needed as we translate plans into progress and heritage into opportunity,” he says, adding that strong institutions and committed community organisations such as the Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi remain anchors of shared values.

“With unity, purpose and perseverance, I am confident Penang will continue to move forward steadily while safeguarding its heritage,” he said.

Chow concludes by wishing the kongsi continued strength and relevance, and extends his warm wishes to all in attendance for good health, happiness and a joyous Winter Solstice celebration.
