THIS year marks a more meaningful Merdeka Day celebration, says Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid.

A Merderka Day and Malaysia Day celebration at the neighbourhood of Taman Tun Sardon on Sept 8 saw some 300 children dressed in the Jalur Gemilang costume and traditional wear while marching as a gesture of celebrating our independence.

It was also joined by JKKK Bukit Gelugor, JKKK Island Glades, JKKK Sungai Gelugor and Rukun Tetangga of the Seri Delima constituency.

Syerleena, who launched the celebration, was also seen joining the children to march from Dewan JKKK Bukit Gelugor to Taman Tun Sardon food court and then marched back towards the starting point.

The marching which started on a breezy Saturday morning at 7am ended around 10am and sprinkled the vibe of Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day in the air as well as capturing the attention of onlookers.

The children then exhibited their talents by reciting poems, singing and dancing patriotically at the Dewan JKKK Bukit Gelugor.

Syeerleena, during her speech at the event, said that this year the National Day is more special and meaningful as there is now cohesion between the state and federal governments after Pakatan Harapan captured Putrajaya and can work together for the benefit of fellow Penangites.

The northeast district Cohesion Officer (Pegawai Perpaduan daerah timur laut) Othman Saad said that more community programmes will be held at the Rukuntetangga (12 Rukuntetangga) of the Seri Delima constituency by the ‘Jabatan Perpaduan Negara dan Integrasi Nasional’.

Also present at the celebration was Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.
