Addressing flood woes, keeping road users safe

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is currently upgrading the drainage system and increasing the road level of Jalan P. Ramlee to mitigate flood problems in the area.

The project, from Jalan Perak to Jalan Ismail Cik Mat, costs about RM3.6253 million.

Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Commitee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the flood mitigation project has started in August this year and is scheduled to complete in August next year.

“This project is one of the 10 infrastructure upgrading projects in the Datuk Keramat state constituency.

“Some of them are ongoing while some will be implemented early next year.

“The cost for the 10 projects is about RM6 million,” he told a press conference in Jalan P. Ramlee today.

Jagdeep said it is important to upgrade the roads to keep road users safe.

“The Penang government will continue to provide the best service to the community,” Jagdeep said.

Jagdeep also said that, last week, the state was told that the Sungai Pinang Flood Mitigation Project was allocated in the 12th Malaysia Plan Rolling Plan One.

“As we have stressed many times in the past, this Federal Government’s project has to be given priority to prevent flash floods in several areas in Penang.

“We are happy to take note that physical works for the Sungai Pinang Flood Mitigation Project are expected to begin in August next year,” he said.

On a separate matter, Jagdeep urged the people to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“As of Dec 18, the MBPP has conducted 521,291 checks to ensure SOP compliance, while the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) has conducted 726,875 checks.

“The compliance rate was 99.72% on the island and 99.37% on the mainland,” he said.
