AS an appreciation of the hardwork by the police force in helping to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, the state government handed out 500 packs of basic necessities to the police officers at the northeast district police headquarters in Jalan Patani today.

State Housing, Local Government, Country and Town Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said this small contribution was meant to recognise and appreciate the services of the men-in-blue on the frontline.

“It’s totally nothing to shout about compared to their sacrifices all this while.

“Instead, they have been working round the clock to make sure everyone adheres to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“I really hope Penangites will continue to stay safe and follow the SOPs in this renewed movement control order (MCO) ,” said Jagdeep, who is also the Datok Keramat assemblyman, before handing over the basic necessities to the police personnel.

The basic necessities included rice, sugar, cordial drinks, cooking oil and flour.

The northeast district police headquarters is located in the Datok Keramat’s constituency.

Jagdeep said a total of 1,142 police personnel, including 350 from the northeast district, are on duty during the ongoing MCO in Penang.

On Jan 15, Jagdeep also distributed food provisions to council workers, who also play a vital role in the war against the coronavirus.

Jagdeep said he is worried over the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the country.

“I was shocked with the record 4,029 cases registered yesterday.

“Let me remind all of you again that the state will not compromise with anyone who violates SOPs,” he said sternly.

Northeast district police chief ACP Soffian Santong, who was present, noted the grouses from motorists over the 11 roadblocks in the district.

He said many of the people had been late for work due to the bumper-to-bumper crawl during peak hours.

“For example, we’ve received numerous feedback regarding the roadblocks at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and Batu Uban.

“I would like to urge everyone to be patient in this challenging period as this is an unavoidable situation.

“All of us need to cooperate and adhere to SOPs to break the chain of infection,” he said.

Also present was Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, who also urged the public to comply with SOPs.
