PENANG’s vibrant arts landscape received another boost with the opening of a new branch of Avantx Art Gallery at Sunshine Central, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing journey as a centre for culture, creativity and artistic appreciation.

While Avantx Art Gallery’s main gallery is located in Bukit Dumbar, the new space at Sunshine Central represents a strategic step towards making art more accessible to the public, creating a welcoming environment where artists, collectors and art enthusiasts can connect.

The official opening ceremony was held on May 30, with several art lovers, well-wishers from afar and near, and other key stakeholders in attendance.

The gallery’s expansion is the vision of veteran art curator, collector and gallery founder James Ong, whose nearly five decades of experience in the Malaysian art industry have made him one of the country’s most respected figures in the art ecosystem.

The opening ceremony was officiated by former National Art Gallery director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Najib Ahmad Dawa, who spoke passionately about the important role that art and culture play in shaping society and preserving identity.

He noted that Penang has long been home to a rich artistic heritage and generations of talented artists, making the state one of Malaysia’s most significant cultural centres.

“Art has the power to connect us, challenge us and remind us of our shared humanity,” he said.

According to Najib, galleries serve as more than exhibition spaces. They create meaningful encounters between artworks, artists and audiences, allowing people to engage with ideas, emotions and stories expressed through creative works.

He described art galleries as places where communication takes place beyond words, where visitors can experience the personality, thoughts and aspirations of artists through their creations.

Najib also highlighted the growing appreciation of art as an investment, noting that collecting artworks not only supports artists but also helps preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

For Ong, the opening of the new gallery reflects a lifelong commitment to nurturing artistic talent and building bridges between creators and collectors.

Born in Penang in 1958, Ong began his journey in the arts after graduating in Fine Art from Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1977. Over the years, he expanded his expertise through training in restoration at Taiwan’s National Palace Museum and further studies at the New York Academy of Art in the United States.

His career has spanned commercial art, antique restoration, curation and gallery management. Throughout the decades, he has played a pivotal role in promoting Malaysian artists, facilitating the sale of hundreds of artworks and helping achieve record-breaking auction results for some of the nation’s most celebrated names.

His contributions have also extended to national institutions, including facilitating the acquisition of significant works for the National Art Gallery.

Today, Ong continues to serve as a vital link between artists, collectors and the market, using his experience and deep knowledge of art to strengthen Malaysia’s creative ecosystem.

The new Avantx Art Gallery at Sunshine Central is expected to further that mission by providing a dynamic platform for exhibitions, artistic dialogue and cultural exchange.

As Penang continues to strengthen its reputation as a hub for arts and culture, the gallery’s expansion serves as a reminder that art remains an essential part of community life, inspiring creativity, preserving heritage and bringing people together through a shared appreciation of beauty and expression.
