EXTRA precautionary measures are being taken to ensure that the Batu Lancang food court is safe for all visitors as well as its traders.

Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong took the initiative to supply a total of six nano sprays worth RM165 each to six coffee stall operators whose stalls are located beside the entrances of the food court.

“In order to enhance the public safety at the food court, we are supplying these nano sprays to the coffee stall operators.

“Since their stalls are situated near to the entrances, we have decided to equip them with the nano spray.

“So far, stringent standard operation procedures (SOPs) are observed here. This is just an additional preventative measure for them,” said Ong after handing over the nano sprays to the coffee stall operators this afternoon.

Ong also urged the relevant ministry to look into plight of the traders not only in Penang but also nationwide by allowing the traders and hawkers to start their businesses earlier.

“I hope that they will consider allowing the traders and hawkers at the markets and food complexes to start the business from 6am onwards.

“At least they will have more customers coming in, especially to get their breakfast. These traders and hawkers are actually badly hit due to the limitations in the operating hours,” said Ong.

Only 30% of traders and hawkers are operating at the food court

Last month, the food court was ordered to close for a week after reporting three positive Covid-19 cases.

Ong added that the Batu Lancang food court traders were working on coming up with the self-pick up services.

“There are planning to have ‘self-pick up’ system at four different spots at the premises. It is like a drive-thru,” said Ong.

Meanwhile, the famous No 76 coffee stall operator at the food court, Yap Poh Bing, said her business has dropped by 80 percent.

“Our customers via online delivery service has also reduced by 50 percent, but it is slightly better than walk-in customers.

“Even though the full lockdown has impacted our business badly, we hope that it can help to break the chain of infection.

“We will endure this for the sake of the public health and safety. Hopefully, we are set free from this situation swiftly,” said Yap.
