CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow has urged Penangites to exercise caution over the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

“Penang has recorded 1,072 Covid-19 cases in Epid Week 25 (June 19 to June 25) as compared with 1,007 cases in Epid Week 24 (June 12 to June 18).

“The data by the Penang Health Department showed a 6.4% increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Penang, based on Epid Week 24 and 25.

“The public should continue to observe the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19,” Chow told a media conference in Komtar today.

He added that the state recorded 173 new cases on June 25 (as of 12pm).

“The Penang government is beginning to receive reports of Covid-19 patients who require admissions to the hospitals for treatment.

“There were 44 cases (as of June 26) that have been referred to the Government hospitals – Penang Hospital (HPP) and Hospital Kepala Batas (HKB),” he said.

Of the 44 patients, five were placed on ICU beds (HPP – one and HKB – four); while 39 patients were placed on acute beds (HPP – 18 and HKB – 21).

Chow said 12 Covid-19 patients (HPP – four and HKB – eight) were admitted to the hospitals on June 26.

“We must continue to be mindful of the Covid-19 danger. Please observe the SOPs,” he said.
