IN the heart of Chulia Street lies one of George Town’s most iconic cafes, The Mugshot Cafe, where the aroma of freshly baked pastries and brewed coffee fills the air.

In an exclusive interview with Buletin Mutiara today, cafe owner Jesse Tan, 46, shares his journey from business school to becoming a pioneer in Penang’s cafe scene.

The interview took place within the charming walls of The Mugshot Cafe, which is known not just for its delicious offerings, but also for its inviting atmosphere and open kitchen concept.

“I initially studied business but eventually pursued my passion by enrolling in bakery school,” Tan said.

His passion led him and his brother to open Rainforest Bakery in 2001, situated in a three-storey heritage building that once operated as a hotel.
Seeking to refine his skills, Tan ventured to Europe in 2003, where he immersed himself in hands-on training and work experiences in countries such as England, France, and Germany.
“That exposure shaped my understanding of both baking and the culinary industry,” he shared.
In 2013, Tan took a bold step forward and opened The Mugshot Cafe, along with his business partner.
“Back then, the cafe culture wasn’t as popular yet, so we were among the early ones to embrace it,” he recalled.
Thanks to his experience and culinary background, the cafe received overwhelming support from locals and tourists alike.
Today, The Mugshot Cafe is renowned for its hot sandwiches, bagels, pastries, cakes, fresh yogurt, and smoothies.

“We are not your typical lunch or dinner spot. We are more of a brunch, tea, or dessert place.

“We don’t have a back kitchen as everything is prepared in plain view, so our customers can see how their food is made. It builds trust and transparency,” Tan explained.
In addition to The Mugshot Cafe, Tan also operates Crumbz @ City Junction in Tanjong Tokong.
“Crumbz offers a different vibe and environment. Each outlet has its own character,” he said.
One thing that sets Tan’s establishments apart is the commitment to in-house production using original recipes and high-quality fresh ingredients.
“Everything we serve is made by us. It’s about quality, not mass production,” he said.
When asked about expansion, Tan said there are currently no plans in the pipeline.
“We prioritise quality over quantity. For us, it’s more about lifestyle than financial gain.
“We don’t try to copy or compete with others. We just focus on doing our own thing. People come here to relax and enjoy the atmosphere,” said Tan.
The Mugshot Cafe is open daily from 8am to 10pm, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights until midnight.
Whether you are in for a hearty bagel, a smooth cup of coffee, or simply looking to unwind in a cozy space, The Mugshot Cafe remains a cherished part of Penang’s ever-evolving culinary landscape!
