Build internet-friendly affordable homes, says rep

TO ensure better connectivity and accessibility to internet service, a Penang lawmaker has proposed that all affordable housing projects in the state be made internet-friendly in the future.

Penang Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said he would like that to be made mandatory when he spoke to Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin yesterday.

He said Gobind has responded positively but had asked him to discuss the matter further with local councils as the subject comes under their purview while Zuraida has no objection and suggested a further study of the matter.

“Internet service is now becoming a basic necessity and in fact all future buildings need to be internet-friendly.

“Therefore, I will be having roundtable discussions with all stakeholders involved for their feedback, probably before next state assembly sitting on April,” he told a press conference.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang also mirrored the Jagdeep’s view, adding that the MBPP would cooperate with the state on this matter to benefit future users.

Jagdeep earlier told those present that the state government had fulfilled its pledges in ensuring sufficient affordable homes for the people.
