Building a better Air Itam

SINCE being elected as the Air Itam assemblyman in 2018, Joseph Ng Soon Siang has outlined a series of improvements and transformative projects for the constituency, spanning infrastructure, welfare, landscaping, economic development, and community engagement.

In an interview with Buletin Mutiara, Ng said his top priority has always been to ensure that Air Itam remains well-maintained while progressing in a balanced and inclusive manner.

“From day one, I’ve done my best to ensure Air Itam is in good hands. We’ve gone through various stages of development, from infrastructure to welfare support and enhancements to public spaces,” he said.

One of the constituency’s proudest achievements is the transformation of a once-abandoned plot of land into the vibrant Desa Mawar Neighbourhood Park, which is a green recreational space for residents.

“It used to be a rearing ground for cows. Today, it’s a park that draws people for morning exercise and community events. We are proud to have reclaimed that space for the people,” said Ng, who previously served as a Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor.

Traffic congestion remains one of the township’s long-standing issues. Ng pointed to the ongoing construction of the Bandar Baru Air Itam to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway bypass, a state-led infrastructure project, as a crucial step in alleviating the problem.

“Everyone knows how bad traffic can get here. With the bypass, I believe that we can cut down travel time by about 10 minutes and disperse traffic more efficiently. The Air Itam folk are eagerly awaiting its completion,” he added.

He added that other measures, such as synchronising traffic lights, closing certain junctions, and limiting right turns, are being studied by the council, particularly on the congested stretch leading to Bandar Baru Air Itam.

“We understand the public’s frustration, and we are exploring various solutions to improve traffic conditions,” he added.

After all, Air Itam is well known for its popular attractions, including the iconic Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Hill, and its renowned local delicacies, which continue to draw both locals and tourists.

With Penang Hill attracting up to 10,000 visitors a day during peak periods, Ng said more parking spaces are being planned, including strategic dispersal to nearby areas such as Jalan Bukit Bendera and Jalan Kebun Bunga.

“The completion of the cable car project by the third quarter of 2026 will provide an alternative route to Penang Hill via Kebun Bunga, helping to ease congestion,” he said.

Among the landscape enhancements carried out was the roundabout beautification project completed in 2019 to brighten and uplift the area.

Ng also highlighted the ongoing mural project in Air Itam, involving students from 11 schools, aimed at fostering unity and creativity.

“Art brings people together. This mural will reflect the spirit of Air Itam, and we’re involving students because they are the future. It should be ready by mid-September,” he said.

On the welfare front, Ng said his service centre has been actively assisting vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and those with health challenges.

He cited that the support rendered includes aid vouchers, medical assistance, and monthly supplies of adult diapers for bedridden individuals.

“Sometimes their children have moved to other places or other cities, and we do our best for them,” he said.

On the economic vibrancy in Air Itam, Ng stressed the need for continuous economic activities to prevent young people from leaving Air Itam township.

“Just look at Sunshine Central. Many prominent business chains have set up shop there. This shows Air Itam has a lot more to offer. We want to keep our young people here by offering them opportunities and vibrancy,” he said.

Following the success of a flea market held earlier this year, Ng is planning to organise another soon. He also revealed that Air Itam will host a George Town Festival (GTF) event at Desa Mawar Neighbourhood Park on Aug 9.

“Our constituency is full of talented individuals and entrepreneurs. We want to showcase this spirit,” he added.

Looking ahead, Ng aims to resolve the issue of abandoned properties and high-assessment vacant units.

“These properties have become targets for break-ins and tarnish the area’s image. It’s an issue we are determined to address,” he said.

Ng remains confident in Air Itam’s future and is committed to driving its continued transformation.

“We have set a benchmark to hold at least one major community event every month – be it blood donations, flea markets or murals – to maintain our momentum. Our goal is to build an inclusive and progressive Air Itam,” he said.
