THE Children-Friendly City: Little Artist programme, held in conjunction with World Children’s Day today, successfully drew participation from 63 enthusiastic young artists.
The one-day event took place at Pusat Penang 2030 in Gurney Paragon Mall and was organised to encourage creativity and self-expression among children.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Koay Gaik Kee said the programme was not designed as a competition, but as a meaningful platform for children to explore their creativity through art.
“Participants were asked to produce a drawing inspired by Penang2030, based on one of three themes namely family-focused, green, or smart state.

“This activity aims to nurture children’s expressive abilities and strengthen their sense of belonging and participation in the city through creative work. It also continues the efforts of MBPP’s ‘Child-Friendly City Programme’.
“The city council remains committed to creating a child-friendly environment, making Penang a safe, comfortable, and inspiring place for children,” she said in her speech.
Koay added that this programme is the second instalment in a series of activities planned in collaboration with Persatuan Nadi Wanita dan Kanak-kanak (NAWAKA).
“Building on the success of the first event held two weeks ago, today’s programme once again attracted many families, creating an even livelier atmosphere.
“I also encouraged the children to take their artwork home to share with classmates and friends, promoting more conversations and allowing children’s voices and perspectives to be seen and heard by more people,” she said.
Meanwhile, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo Sze Zeng, who was also present, commended the initiative.
He shared the inspiring story of renowned French Impressionist painter Claude Monet.
Woo highlighted that Monet completed his iconic Water Lilies series during the final seven years of his life, at a time when cataracts had severely impaired his vision.
“Despite barely being able to distinguish colours, he relied on memory to complete the masterpiece, a testament to extraordinary determination and artistic passion,” he said.
Also present was Penang Green Council (PGC) general manager Josephine Tan Mei Ling.
