CONCERNED with safe driving, particularly among motorcyclists, a ‘Drive Safe With Us, Be Safe, Be Seen’ campaign for motorcyclists is being conducted this year.

The campaign, organised by Bagan Jermal constituency, in collaboration with the Penang Road Safety Department (JKJR), Petronas Raja Uda, Butterworth and Boon Siew Honda, is also to help reduce serious or fatal accidents in view of the coming Chinese New Year festival.

Bagan Jermal assemblyman Soon Lip Chee said the aim of the campaign was to foster awareness on the importance of prioritising personal safety on road and practising prudent attitudes when using roads, especially during the festive seasons.

“The campaign will educate the public, especially youngsters on good driving habits as well as the importance of keeping their vehicles in good condition.

“During the campaign, Boon Siew Honda will provide 1,000 safety vests to motorcyclists at Petronas Raja Uda, for their safety purpose,” Soon told a press conference today.

Penang JKJR director M. Thurkah Thevi lamented that many motorcyclists did not maintain their motorcycles properly nor give a thought to the condition of their helmets.

“Honda representatives will conduct free vehicle checks for motorcycles under 150cc category before riders begin their journey home for the festive season.

“After the free checks, motorcyclists will able to know the condition of their bikes and JKJR representatives will provide stickers to be pasted on their motorcycles.

“After this process is done, participants are entitled to receive their safety vests.

“This effort is carried out because statistics revealed that most of fatal road accidents in the country involved motorcyclists.

“We will continue to conduct awareness campaigns and collaborations with enforcement agencies to reduce fatal accidents,” Thurkah emphasised.

The campaign also aims to increase awareness among road users on compliance with road laws when they ‘balik kampung’ to celebrate Chinese New Year which falls on Feb 5.

Details of the campaign are as follows:

Date: 21 January 2019
Time: 8.30am until 2pm
Venue: Petronas, Raja Uda, Butterworth.

The public is encouraged to take part in state government’s initiatives that are meant for the benefit of the communities.
