ATTENTION all runners on Penang island! There is an exciting news just for you — the running track at City Stadium, located in Lorong Kulit, is now officially open to the public, and the best part? It’s completely free!

Open daily from 5pm to 7.30pm (except during special functions or events), this initiative is the brainchild of Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

Wong expressed his gratitude to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) for helping bring his idea to life.

“Today marks a historic moment as we open the City Stadium’s running track to the public — completely free of charge.

“As an avid runner and chairman of the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM), I’ve observed that there are very few suitable venues on the island for proper training. Options are limited.

“So I’m truly pleased that MBPP supported my suggestion to open this track. After all, a dedicated running surface is ideal for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and families who want to enjoy an evening walk or jog,” said Wong during a press conference following the official launch.

Wong also highlighted that the track is made from high-quality material, offering a safe and performance-friendly surface for users aiming to improve their fitness or athletic performance.

Also present at the opening ceremony were MBPP Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, MBPP councillors Benji Ang Ming Quan, Visvenathan Tangavello, Koay Gaik Kee, and Penang Youth and Sports Department (JSBNPP) director Mozakir Buyong Mokhtar.

Rajendran clarified that for now, only the running track is open to the public, while the stadium’s grass pitch remains off-limits to ensure it stays in top condition for football matches.
