CNY joy at PCTH open house

A FOOT-tapping multi-cultural dance performances, balancing act, lion dance, a Chinese traditional orchestra and many more musical acts could be seen at the Penang Chinese Town Hall (PCTH) annual Chinese New Year open house in George Town today.

 

Many people from all walks of life thronged the open house which started around 9.30am.

 

The honourable guests Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his wife Tan Lean Kee brought merriment to the open house.

 

PCTH chairman Datuk Seri Khor Teng How said a harmonious relationship regardless of race or religion could be forged through the open house.

 

“We have organised the annual Chinese New Year open house for more than a decade.

 

“Apart from promoting the traditional Chinese celebration, our main objective is to see unity among the people in Penang.

 

“This is because we believe through such effort, it can build a multicultural society that is more understanding,” Khor said in his speech during the open house today.

Meanwhile, Chow commended PCTH’s effort in organising the Chinese New Year open house yearly.

 

“As we can see today, hordes of people from various groups and associations join us to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

 

“The open house by PCTH allows everyone to learn more about the Chinese culture.

 

“This shows a great spirit of togetherness and a closer relationship between all races.

 

“We need to remember that only with a unified heart, the state can be built prosperously.

 

“I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year,” Chow said in his speech.

 

Among other distinguished guests present at the open house were the consul-general of China to Penang Lu Shiwei, Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Minister Sim Tze Tzin, state Welfare, Caring Society, and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh, state Domestic and International Trade Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain, state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee and state Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.

 

Also present were State Assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang, Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen and Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit.
