PENANG now has a new e-hailing service, Kumpool, to help alleviate traffic congestion as well as provide convenience to commuters.

However, Kumpool is slightly different from other e-hailing services as it is more like the ‘carpooling service’ (using a van) within a radius of 5km.

The service is currently available for the residents in the vicinity of the Bayan Bayan Baru area which covers locations such as Queensbay Mall, USM, Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex, Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone and many others.

Its manager, Goh Chun Hean said Kumpool aims to provide a convenient and more affordable ride-pooling platform for passengers while helping to reduce the traffic jam.

“We will also be expanding our service to other areas in the future.

“So, I would like to call upon the residents in this neighbourhood to download our app and try our service,” Goh said during the launching ceremony of the Kumpool app at Super Tanker Food Court near Taman Lip Sin.

State Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin and Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan were the guests of honour present during the launching ceremony.

Meanwhile, Sim said the Kumpool ride-pooling service can be helpful for students, working adults as well as marketgoers.

Zairil said the various transport services in Penang help to enhance the transport network overall.

It is learned that Kumpool has over 70 stops in the Bayan Baru neighbourhood and its one-month promotion of the RM1 per ride starts today.

Kumpool is also operating in other states like Johor, and Selangor as well as Kuala Lumpur with over 230,000 passengers using the service.

Operating hours of Kumpool is from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm daily.
