Conference to empower the Tamils

SOME 1,000 delegates worldwide will be visiting Penang for the International Tamil Diaspora and Tamil Youth Convention this October.

The convention is jointly organised by the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), Global Tamil Organisation (GTO), Penang Society for Advancement of Tamils (PSAT), Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) and the state government.

Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy said the event would help to nurture young leaders and to develop an understanding on the economic development of the Tamil community.

“The convention also aimed at developing brotherly ties among Tamil students and youngsters from various countries and to promote networking.

“Delegates from Singapore, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Mauritius, South Africa, Europe, United States and Malaysia will be attending the conference. The conference will be conducted in Tamil and English,” Dr Ramasamy told a press conference today.

GOPIO International chairman S. Selvarajoo said Penang was chosen to be the host because of its historical background, in relation to the early settlement of the Indians.

“The earliest Tamil settlement in Penang was in 1700, according to the Tamil diaspora,” he said.

The convention will be held at The Top in Komtar on Oct 20 and 21.

The fee is RM100 for youth and RM200 for adult.

On a separate matter, Dr Ramasamy welcomed the announcement made by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, pertaining to the citizenship issue for those who are above 60-years-old.

“The announcement reflects a good start in delivering the promises made in the Pakatan Harapan’s GE14 manifesto,” he said.
