CONSUL-GENERAL of Japan in Penang Orikasa Hiroyuki is looking forward to the Penang Yosakoi Parade on Saturday (Sept 17) at Karpal Singh Drive with much enthusiasm, and at the same time is feeling a tinge of sadness.

For the 62-year-old diplomat, the event will be his last official appearance in Penang before he leaves for Japan two days later for another posting.

Meeting Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in a farewell visit in Komtar today, Orikasa said: “I’m very sad to say that I need to leave Penang after being here for one year and three months.

“I appreciate the Penang government’s contribution to the Japanese community. The state and the people of Penang are generous and supportive of our activities, not just the very successful Bon Odori.

“I hope the Japanese community can contribute and promote Penang together with the people here.

“There are 3,000 Japanese living in Penang and about 120 Japanese companies operating here.

“Also, I want to thank the state government, under your leadership, for the orderly vaccination programmes during the Covid-19 pandemic which was brought under control,” Orikasa told Chow during his visit.

Orikasa was accompanied by his wife, Pauline, who is from Melaka, and his deputy consul-general Inui Hiroyuki. He will be succeeded by Kawaguchi Yoshiyasu.

Chow, who will also attend the Penang Yosakoi Parade, said the volume of Japanese investments is very respectable, among the top three or top four, in the state.

He said he noticed many locals also embrace Japanese culture, especially when he attended Renesas’ 50th-anniversary celebration recently.

Before the meeting ended, Orikasa wished Chow success and good health, and Chow reciprocated by wishing him a blessed journey home and a good posting too. They also exchanged souvenirs.
