Covid-19 outbreak in Penang schools mostly linked to parents’ infections

THE Covid-19 cases that were reported among the school students in Penang were mostly transmitted from their parents to them, according to the Penang Health Department.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in revealing this, said most of the cases were detected from the parents’ working places.

“The parents were infected before transmitting the virus to their children,” he said at a press conference after officiating the launching of ‘Penang Brings the World to Your Doorstep’ sculptures at the Esplanade today.

Chow was responding to a question by a reporter on the closure of eight schools for two days, beginning April 27, bringing the total number of schools closed in Penang to 28 thus far. Twenty schools were shuttered on April 26.

Chow said the closure was in line with the Education Ministry’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“The state Education Department is now doing a risk assessment before deciding whether the schools are safe to reopen.

“The upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri and school holiday break are crucial to break the chain,” he said.
