SPORTS enthusiasts and members of the Penang Chinese Recreation Club (CRC) can now look forward to accessing the newly-built multipurpose hall and sports academy complex.

The project was initiated six years ago, but was halted halfway due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It has now been completed and its facilities are now open for use.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present to grace the complex’s opening ceremony, said he was thrilled to see the completion of the complex.

“This state-of-the-art facility will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in encouraging a healthy lifestyle and providing an avenue for social, intellectual, and physical activity.

“The complex was previously a bungalow house before being transformed to become CRC’s multipurpose hall and sports academy complex.

“The building will also be able to accommodate those who are keen to hold events, making it an ideal venue for sports, entertainment, and social activities for the community,” he said before officiating the event at the complex today.

The complex has one squash court and three badminton courts, besides space for table tennis. All of them are built according to international standards.

It also houses a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wellness centre to provide treatment.

Chow said he was glad about CRC’s proven track record in developing their members into champions in the sports arena.

“For instance, Goh Jin Wei and Chiam Jun Wei were two Penang-born badminton champions, who represented the country in the international arena.

“They were CRC members who honed their talents here back then,” he said.

Penang CRC president Benson Goh said he was delighted with the completion of the sports academy complex after six years.

“We hope this complex can cater to the needs of members who want to spend their leisure time here.

“It is in line with the mission and vision of our club, which is to promote an active lifestyle among our members,” he said.

Chow and other dignitaries were brought for a tour around the complex. Chow also played badminton and ping pong during his visit.

Also present were Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, organising chairman Michael Yen and CRC general manager Alvin Chong.
