Cyclists with foldies get a wheely big boost from Rapid Penang

SOME 250 Rapid Penang buses, both in Penang island and the mainland, are now equipped with spaces to park foldable bikes – a move to encourage the public to cycle and use public transport.

The Penang government, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Rapid Penang have been working together to realise the environmental-friendly initiative.

MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said cyclists can now cycle from their home to the bus stop, ride the Rapid Penang buses to their next stop and continue cycling to their destination.

“Look out for the Rapid Penang buses with a foldable bike sticker. Buses with the sticker allow cyclists to ride the bus with their foldies.

“Each bus can accommodate between five and 10 units of foldable bikes,” Yew said in his speech during the launching of ‘Foldies on Rapid Bus’ in front of Setia SPICE Arena today.

Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Muhammad Yazurin Sallij Muhammad Yassin said the service comes with no extra charge.

Muhammad Yazurin Sallij said the company was also preparing a training module to educate their bus captains to be more conscious towards cyclists.

Also present were Rapid Penang acting chief operating officer Ahmad Shabuddin Abdullah and some cyclists from Bike-On-Friday.
