A DIGITAL farming initiative by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) has shown results after the first batch of chilies were harvested today.

Its mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the council had in a collaboration with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and Urbanest established a Green Education Centre at Padang Chempedak, north Seberang Perai district in March this year. The centre had adopted the usage of IoT technology and Circular Economy in promoting digital farming.

He said the chilli farming in July this year used 1,100 ‘Kulai’ chilli seedlings.

“It is operating in a ‘self sustaining’ manner at an early stage.

“We have trained eight council staff members with the cooperation of UPSI and Urbanest. Through the Circular Economy model, the centre has harvested the first 28kg of vegetables in May.

“We (MBSP) would like to thank UPSI, Urbanest and our council staff, who have shown high commitment while supporting the pursuit of hygiene, beauty, greenery of the earth and the well-being of the environment.

Rozali added that about 600 trees can be planted using traditional planting method whereas 1,450 trees can be planted using the hydroponic planting technique.
