Digital literacy important for youth development, says exco man

YOUTHS should equip themselves with digital skills in this era of Industry 4.0.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee stressed the importance of such knowledge so that they are prepared for the rapid technological changes.

He said youths in Penang must always improve their digital skills so that they can be role models and lead the youth innovations in other states in this digital era.

“Digitalisation has already become a part of our lives and we need to cope with this holistic development.

“I believe that the youths can increase their interest and awareness of the importance of digital skills for future undertakings to attain success.

“This effort is in line with the ‘Youth for Future’ slogan, which was launched by the state government to develop youths in the state,” he said at a press conference after opening the 2022 National Level Business Website Creation Competition in Sungai Pinang youth centre today.

The Batu Lancang Vocational College (BLVC) has taken the initiative to organise the competition in collaboration with Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC).

It is aimed at providing opportunities for the Diploma in Business Management students at 47 vocational colleges in the country to showcase their skills in creating business websites.

The programme was one of the platforms to see how the elements of IR4.0 could be applied.

Soon said this would prepare the students before stepping into the corporate world.

PYDC general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling said the objective of the competition was to unearth the talent of business website creation skills among vocational students.

“This is the first time that such competition has been expanded to a national level.

“Students are given the opportunities to expose themselves to the ways of marketing and advertising their products and services through this competition.

“We hope the participants can master the skills of creating a business website which is very much emphasised by the modern industry nowadays,” she said.

BLVC Business Department head Fadzilah Mahamad Sarip was delighted to be able to work with state.

“We want to empower the youths with digital skills,” she said.
